Eligibility Requirements

Candidates must meet the following BCSP requirements:

  • Ten (10) years of experience where at least 35% of job tasks are/were related to the management of safety-related programs, processes, procedures, and/or personnel
  • Successful completion of the SMP® examination
  • Payment of the applicable annual renewal fee after certification
  • Completion of BCSP recertification requirements to maintain the certification
  • Compliance with BCSP’s professional conduct and disclosure requirements

BCSP currently lists no minimum education requirement for the SMP®. Final interpretation of experience, application approval, examination eligibility and certification decisions are made exclusively by BCSP.

Examination Overview

  • The SMP® examination is administered by BCSP and delivered through Pearson testing centres
  • The examination is computer-based
  • The current examination time is four and a half hours
  • After an application is approved, candidates have one year to take and pass the examination
  • Official results are available after the candidate submits the examination
  • Application, examination and renewal fees are set and collected by BCSP and may change
