Description
IOSH Managing Safely® is a practical course for people who manage or supervise others. It explains why safety and health is an essential part of a manager’s role and shows how effective risk management supports people, productivity, reputation and business performance.
The programme is applicable across industries and organisation sizes. It does not expect participants to become safety experts; instead, it gives them the knowledge and tools needed to take sensible action on the safety and health matters for which they are responsible.
Learning is designed to be engaging and business-focused. Recognisable scenarios, case studies, clear examples, discussion and practical exercises help delegates connect the course with their own workplace and return to work ready to apply what they have learned.
Who Is This Course For?
The course is intended for managers and supervisors who have responsibility for people, activities, workplaces, projects or operational decisions.
- Line managers, supervisors and team leaders
- Department heads, section leaders and operational managers
- Project managers, site supervisors and shift supervisors
- Managers moving into roles with safety and health responsibilities
- Professionals who contribute to risk assessment, incident investigation or performance monitoring
- Organisations seeking a consistent management-level approach to safety across teams or sites
Eligibility Requirements
IOSH states that no prior safety expertise is required. The course begins with essential concepts and develops them through practical application.
- No formal occupational safety and health qualification is required
- Participants should be able to take part in the language used for training and assessment
- A current or intended management or supervisory role is strongly relevant
- Delegates should attend the required learning and complete all applicable assessments
- Any reasonable-adjustment needs should be discussed before enrolment with the confirmed provider
Course Outline
Delegates consider why safety and health belongs within normal management practice. The module connects the human impact of harm with operational, financial, legal and reputational consequences, and introduces the manager's role in preventing injury and ill health.
- Why managers need to manage safety and health
- The business and human case for effective management
- How individual management decisions influence workplace outcomes
- Essential terminology used throughout the programme
This module explains how to identify hazards and evaluate risk. Delegates consider who may be harmed, how harm might occur, and how likelihood and consequence can be used to prioritise action.
- The difference between a hazard and a risk
- Identifying hazards in tasks, workplaces and activities
- Considering people who may be affected
- Evaluating likelihood, severity and overall risk
- Recording findings and deciding what needs attention first
Delegates learn how to move from assessment to action. The focus is on practical controls that remove hazards where possible, reduce exposure and provide reliable protection for the team.
- Choosing proportionate and effective controls
- Prioritising elimination and stronger preventive measures
- Considering residual risk after controls are introduced
- Assigning actions, responsibilities and completion dates
- Reviewing whether controls remain suitable and effective
This module places safety and health responsibilities within the manager's everyday role. Delegates consider legal obligations, organisational arrangements, accountability and the importance of obtaining competent support when specialist advice is needed.
- The manager's contribution to organisational safety arrangements
- Legal and organisational duties relevant to management decisions
- Accountability, consultation and communication
- The role of policies, procedures and competent advice
- Why good practice must be translated into consistent action
Delegates examine different types of workplace hazard and the ways in which people may be harmed. The module helps managers look beyond obvious physical dangers and consider environmental, health and human-factor issues relevant to their teams.
- Recognising a broad range of workplace hazards
- Understanding immediate and longer-term harm
- Considering work equipment, substances, activities and the work environment
- Recognising organisational and human factors that can increase risk
- Matching identified hazards with appropriate controls and support
This module explains how effective incident investigation supports learning rather than blame. Delegates consider what evidence to gather, how to distinguish immediate events from underlying causes, and how corrective actions can prevent recurrence.
- Why incidents, near misses and ill-health events should be investigated
- Planning an investigation and preserving useful evidence
- Identifying immediate, underlying and root causes
- Developing corrective and preventive actions
- Communicating lessons and checking that improvements are completed
The final module shows how managers can use information to determine whether safety arrangements are working. Delegates consider proactive and reactive measures, monitoring activities and how results can drive continuous improvement.
- Selecting meaningful safety and health performance information
- Using inspections, observations, audits and reviews
- Learning from incidents, absence, reports and trends
- Distinguishing proactive indicators from outcome measures
- Following up actions and communicating performance
- Using evidence to plan further improvement
