Description
Chartered membership is an IOSH professional membership grade for experienced occupational safety and health practitioners who can demonstrate strategic responsibility, advanced professional competence, leadership, ethical judgement and continuing professional development.
Successful members may use the post-nominal CMIOSH and the designation Chartered Safety and Health Practitioner while their membership remains active and they continue to meet IOSH requirements.
CMIOSH is not a training course, academic qualification or certificate purchased from a consultancy. It is a professional membership grade awarded and maintained by IOSH following its own assessment.
Who Is This Consultancy For?

Eligibility Requirements
Professional Development Assessment Route
The PDA route is the current route for Certified Members who are ready to demonstrate competence at Chartered level. Before registration, a candidate should be able to show recent senior-level practice and sufficient time and evidence to complete the assessment.
- Current Certified Member (CertIOSH) status
- Evidence of strategic responsibility and senior-level professional practice
- Experience advising organisational leadership and influencing major decisions
- Examples of leading organisation-wide OSH initiatives and improvement
- Readiness for a Chartered-level knowledge assessment
- Recent work-based evidence suitable for the assigned competency areas
- Maintained CPD and completion of the applicable Ethical Practice in OSH requirements
Experiential Route
IOSH’s experiential route is intended for Affiliate or Technical Members, and eligible non-members joining at Affiliate level, who have significant relevant OSH leadership experience but do not hold an IOSH-accredited Level 6 or 7 OSH qualification.
- Normally five to 10 years of relevant leadership experience in an OSH role
- Evidence of leading, innovating, influencing and creating positive organisational change
- A detailed CV or resumé covering roles, dates, organisations and senior OSH responsibilities
- Knowledge assessment used by IOSH to determine Certified- or Chartered-level progression
- Chartered-level portfolio, paper, CPD, ethics and interview requirements if directed by IOSH
Complete CMIOSH Scope
We review the candidate's IOSH grade, qualifications, leadership experience, current application status and career objectives to identify the most likely route and matters requiring IOSH confirmation.
- Certified membership and current assessment-status check
- Strategic responsibility and senior-experience review
- PDA or experiential-route suitability guidance
- Route limitations, readiness risks and evidence-gap explanation
- Personalised preparation roadmap
We compare the candidate's experience with the IOSH competency framework and identify where evidence, development or reflection needs to be strengthened at Chartered level.
- Review across technical, core and behavioural categories
- Assessment of strategic thinking, leadership, governance and stakeholder influence
- Identification of weak, outdated, duplicated or unsupported examples
- Development priorities linked to the candidate's role and assessment route
We help the candidate build a structured revision plan and understand the level of judgement expected without accessing, reproducing or predicting protected assessment questions.
- Competency-framework-based study plan
- Revision across relevant technical and core knowledge areas
- Practice with lawful, independently developed scenario and judgement exercises
- Guidance on time management and assessment readiness
- Identification of further development needs before registration or reassessment
We help plan a coherent portfolio using authentic recent work that demonstrates the candidate's own decisions, influence, leadership and measurable impact.
- Evidence inventory and confidentiality review
- Mapping against mandatory behavioural and assigned technical/core areas
- Selection of evidence showing appropriate complexity, seniority and personal contribution
- Evidence naming, sequencing, redaction and submission-readiness checks
- Gap plan for missing or unsuitable evidence
We improve the clarity and assessability of candidate-written explanations while preserving the candidate's ownership, voice and responsibility for every statement and document.
- Context, action, judgement, influence and outcome structure
- Clear distinction between personal contribution and team or organisational activity
- Impact-focused language supported by genuine evidence
- Consistency checks across portfolio, CV, CPD and discussion paper
- Quality review against current IOSH instructions available to the candidate
We support the candidate in planning, drafting and reviewing their own reflective paper within the current IOSH word range and route requirements.
- Paper outline and narrative flow
- Professional background and progression structure
- Explanation of evidence choices and development
- Reflective analysis, professional insights and future contribution
Candidate-drafted review for clarity, coherence and authenticity
We review the candidate's CPD record and help prepare a practical development plan while keeping the official ethics e-learning and assessment entirely candidate-led.
- Annual CPD-cycle and record review
- Planning, learning, application and reflection checks
- Guidance on meaningful reflective entries supported by genuine activity
- Ethical-practice readiness and professional-conduct discussion
- Pre-interview CPD and ethics checklist
We provide structured preparation so the candidate can explain their own portfolio, professional judgement and leadership decisions confidently in the IOSH interview.
- Portfolio- and paper-based preparation plan
- Mock professional discussion using independently developed questions
- Practice explaining strategic decisions, stakeholder influence and ethical judgement
- Feedback on clarity, depth, evidence authentication and professional communication
- Online interview environment and readiness checklist
If IOSH requests clarification, development or further evidence, we help the candidate interpret the feedback and prepare an accurate, candidate-led response.
- Detailed review of official assessor comments
- Evidence-gap and response planning
- Review of candidate-prepared revisions
- Quality check before resubmission
- Practical guidance within the agreed support period
Candidates with an existing IPD, skills-development portfolio or other already-open legacy case may receive support only against the instructions that IOSH confirms remain applicable to that case.
Legacy terminology or assessment activities are not automatically applied to new CMIOSH applications. The candidate's official IOSH account and written instructions always take priority.
The candidate receives practical mentoring throughout the agreed consultancy period, including progress reviews, evidence priorities, development planning and preparation for the next stage.
