Description
Certified membership is an IOSH professional membership grade for occupational safety and health practitioners who can demonstrate suitable degree-level knowledge, relevant professional experience and an ongoing commitment to continuing professional development.
IOSH describes Certified membership as recognition of professional capability to manage health and safety strategy and operations. Successful members may use the post-nominal letters CertIOSH while their membership remains active and they continue to meet IOSH requirements.
CertIOSH is not a training course, academic award or certificate purchased from a consultancy. It is a membership grade awarded and maintained by IOSH after its own review of the applicant’s evidence.
Who Is This Consultancy For?
This service is intended for health and safety professionals who want independent guidance before or during a CertIOSH membership application or upgrade request.
- Practitioners holding a relevant Level 6 or 7 occupational safety and health qualification
- Applicants with at least two years of relevant professional health and safety experience
- IOSH members preparing a category-transfer or membership-upgrade request
- Candidates unsure whether an international or non-accredited qualification is suitable
- Applicants who need to improve their CV, role descriptions or experience evidence
- Professionals who need help organising CPD records and reflective development plans
- Candidates who have received a request for additional evidence or official feedback from IOSH
- Experienced OSH leaders considering the IOSH experiential route
Eligibility Requirements
Standard Qualification and Experience Route
IOSH’s current published requirements indicate that applicants normally need:
- A relevant Level 6 or 7 health and safety qualification, such as an eligible diploma, degree or equivalent
- At least two years of relevant professional occupational safety and health experience
- Evidence of continuing professional development
- A sufficiently detailed CV or category-transfer record
- Final qualification documents and any additional unit evidence requested by IOSH
- An active commitment to maintaining IOSH membership and CPD requirements
IOSH can assess qualifications from different countries. If a qualification is at the appropriate level but is not currently accredited by IOSH, the applicant may still be able to apply through the non-accredited route, although additional information or mapping may be required.
Experiential Route
The experiential route is a separate assessment route for established OSH leaders who do not hold an IOSH-accredited Level 6 or 7 OSH qualification. IOSH states that this route is intended for Affiliate or Technical Members, and eligible non-members joining at Affiliate level, with five to 10 years of relevant OSH leadership experience.
- Initial review of senior-level OSH leadership experience
- Knowledge assessment against IOSH technical and core competencies
- Portfolio of evidence addressing the required competency areas
- Professional discussion paper explaining evidence choices, development and future contribution
- APEL assessment by IOSH using evidence of learning gained through professional experience
- CPD commitment and any other current route requirements set by IOSH
Complete CertIOSH Scope
We review the candidate's qualifications, experience, current IOSH membership status and career objectives to identify the most likely route and any matters that need confirmation from IOSH.

- Clear presentation of health and safety responsibilities
- Use of specific action-focused professional language
- Stronger explanation of leadership, management and operational contribution

We help organise the candidate's authentic qualification and supporting evidence, identify missing items and prepare a clear submission checklist.

Indicative topics
- Defining the scope of the assessment
- Identifying hazards and people at risk
- Evaluating existing controls and risk levels
- Applying the hierarchy of control
- Preparing action plans with responsibilities and dates
- Communicating and reviewing assessment findings
We guide the candidate through the applicable application or upgrade process and check that required documents are consistent before the candidate submits them to IOSH.
- Personalised document checklist
- Application-form and category-transfer guidance
- Consistency checks across CV, qualification and experience information
- Submission sequencing and file-organisation guidance
- Practical support with understanding official IOSH instructions
Where IOSH requests clarification, further evidence or revisions, we help the candidate understand the feedback and prepare an accurate, evidence-based response.
- Detailed review of official comments and feedback
- Guidance on revising experience descriptions or supporting documents
- Review and improvement of candidate-written responses
- Quality check before resubmission
- Assistance with addressing further comments received during the agreed support period
Some candidates may have an older or already-open IOSH assessment case. Where IOSH confirms that legacy activities remain valid, support can include review of Personal Behaviour and Performance activities, candidate responses, assessor feedback and relevant evidence.
Legacy terminology or requirements are not automatically applied to new CertIOSH requests. The current instructions shown in the candidate's official IOSH account take priority.
For candidates confirmed as suitable for the experiential route, the support scope can be aligned with the current IOSH assessment stages.
- Knowledge-assessment preparation guidance
- Competency-based portfolio planning
- Selection and organisation of authentic work-based evidence
- Professional discussion paper structure and reflective-writing guidance
- Review of candidate-prepared drafts against current IOSH instructions
- Practical mentoring through the applicable submission stages
The candidate receives practical mentoring throughout the agreed consultancy period, including progress reviews, document priorities, response guidance and preparation for the next required stage.
