Description

ISO 14001 is the internationally recognised requirements standard for environmental management systems. It gives organisations a systematic framework to manage environmental responsibilities, improve environmental performance, meet compliance obligations and achieve environmental objectives.

The Lead Auditor course goes beyond clause awareness. It develops the ability to translate EMS requirements and compliance obligations into audit criteria, evaluate objective evidence, assess environmental controls and performance, communicate findings and lead an audit team through the complete audit cycle.

Who Is This Course For?

This course is suitable for professionals who audit, manage, implement or improve environmental management systems, including:

  • Environmental managers, officers, engineers and sustainability professionals
  • HSE, EHS, ESG, compliance and governance professionals
  • Internal auditors seeking audit-team and Lead Auditor capability
  • Environmental consultants and ISO 14001 implementation specialists
  • Supplier, contractor and second-party environmental auditors
  • Certification-body auditor candidates preparing for a recognised training requirement
  • Operations, facilities, manufacturing, construction, energy and project managers
  • Professionals responsible for compliance obligations, audit programmes, corrective action and continual improvement

Recommended Prior Knowledge

CQI and IRCA identify prior knowledge of ISO 14001 requirements and commonly used environmental management terms and definitions. Learners should also understand:

  • The intended outcomes of an EMS: improved environmental performance, fulfilment of compliance obligations and achievement of environmental objectives
  • The Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle and the interrelationship of leadership, policy, planning, implementation, evaluation and improvement
  • Environmental aspects and impacts associated with normal, abnormal and emergency operating conditions
  • The use of resources, emissions, releases, waste, energy, nuisance and effects on ecosystems
  • The role of environmental legal and other compliance obligations within an EMS
  • Typical approaches for evaluating significance and using results to set controls and improvement priorities
  • Basic audit concepts, professional conduct, evidence and organisational processes

Pre-course readiness: Learners without adequate ISO 14001 knowledge should complete suitable foundation-level learning or the approved Training Partner’s readiness activity before beginning advanced Lead Auditor training.
